He received his Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees from China University of Petroleum in 1984, 1987 and 1990 respectively. He was promoted to Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Tsinghua University in 1996, and served as a Visiting Professor at The Ohio State University (USA) and Western University (Canada). His main research fields cover fluidization, multiphase reaction engineering, particle technology, nanocatalysis and energy chemical engineering. Currently, he focuses on new concepts and theories of multiphase reactors, and develops novel processes and equipment for coal & petrochemical industry, nanomaterials, clean energy chemicals, environmental governance and other fields.

He has presided over the design of more than 30 multiphase reactors that have been put into commercial operation, including a 10,000-ton/year carbon nanotube production line via nanocluster fluidized bed, a 600,000-ton/year fluidized bed methanol-to-propylene plant, a 100,000-ton/year fluidized bed acetylene-to-vinyl chloride unit, and a 150,000-ton/year downer catalytic cracking device. His research achievements have won the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award (2002, 2008), First Prize of Sinopec Science and Technology Progress Award (2001, 2007), First Prize of Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education (2005, 2015), and First Prize of Invention Award (2012). He has published more than 600 SCI papers with over 68,000 citations. He serves as Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society of Particuology and Director of the Energy Particle Materials Committee.
