His honors include the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Young Scientist Award of the Ministry of Education, China Youth Science and Technology Award, Beijing May 4th Youth Medal, Newton Advanced Fellowship from the Royal Society of the UK, Tsinghua Liu Bing Award, and Tian Zhaowu Award at International Electrochemical Conference. He was listed as a Highly Cited Researcher in the World for four consecutive years (2017–2020).

He has long conducted research on energy chemistry and energy materials. In recent years, he integrates major national demands with fundamental research, focusing on core principles and key energy materials of lithium-sulfur batteries to address critical requirements for energy storage and utilization. He proposed the concepts of lithium bond chemistry and ion-solvent composite structures in lithium-sulfur batteries. Targeting high-energy batteries, he developed multiple high-performance energy materials such as composite lithium metal anodes and carbon-sulfur composite cathodes, and fabricated pouch-type lithium-sulfur battery devices, which have been widely applied in energy storage fields with remarkable outcomes.

Many of his supervised graduate students have won prestigious awards: Cheng Xinbing, Peng Hongjie, Tang Cheng, Zhang Xueqiang, Chen Xiang etc. received Tsinghua University Academic Newcomer; Li Boquan, Zhang Xueqiang, Yuan Zhe, Wang Hansen, Zhong Ling, Zhao Changxin etc. won Tsinghua University Special Scholarship; Chen Xiaoru, Zhao Changxin etc. claimed the National Challenge Cup Grand Prize. He has been awarded the First Prize of Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education and the First Prize of Basic Research Achievement Award of the Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China.
