Current Affiliation: CNRS Senior Research Director, Director of Institut de Chimie de la Matière Condensée de Bordeaux (ICMCB-CNRS, France)
Cyril Aymonier is a preeminent French expert in supercritical fluid chemistry and sustainable advanced materials recycling, leading France’s largest condensed matter chemistry institute with 250+ researchers and developing industrial-scale supercritical fluid manufacturing technologies.
He obtained his engineering diploma from INP Toulouse in 1994, MSc in agroresources in 1997, and PhD in supercritical water oxidation from the University of Bordeaux in 2000. He undertook two years of postdoctoral research at the University of Freiburg, Germany (2000–2002), then joined ICMCB as a CNRS researcher in 2002. He headed the Supercritical Fluids research group from 2011 to 2021, and was appointed institute director afterwards. He received the CNRS Bronze Medal early in his career and the 2024 CNRS Innovation Medal for outstanding industrial translation of supercritical fluid science. In 2019, he founded the IDELAM startup to commercialize multi-component material delamination recycling technology.
His three interconnected research pillars are: nucleation/growth chemistry of nanomaterials in supercritical media, circular-economy material recycling via supercritical fluid treatment, and scalable industrial supercritical fluid process development. He has authored 181 peer-reviewed journal articles, 10 book chapters and 44 patents, maintaining long-term industrial collaborations with Airbus, Safran, Renault, Saint-Gobain and Merck for catalyst, aeronautic material and waste photovoltaic cell recycling. He has delivered 76 invited talks at international conferences across Europe, Asia and North America on green supercritical manufacturing pathways.
Cyril Aymonier’s long-term research interests cover supercritical fluid chemistry, controllable synthesis of nanostructured materials, supercritical fluid-based waste recycling, and the industrialization of sustainable solvothermal processing technologies.
